MINUTES OF THE ELM RIVER TOWNSHIP BOARD MEETING

JULY 9, 2009

 

 

The regular township meeting was called to order at 7:00 p.m.  Board members present

were Lynn Huotari, Deb Maki, Margaret Lindeman, Jim Saur, and Bob Sibilsky.

MINUTES OF MEETING:  The minutes of the June 18, 2009 meeting were read and approved.  Motion to approve:  Lindeman/Saur, All voted aye.

TREASURER’S REPORT: The treasurer’s report was given by Treasurer Huotari and was accepted as given.  The fund balances are as follows:  Citizen’s Bank CD  $7,258.36, SNB General Acc’t  $1,120.18, MBIA Fire Fund $37,789.59, MBIA General Fund $97,140.59, MBIA Tax Fund  $43,658.23, SNB Tax Account $4,268.59.

CORRESPONDENCE:

An invite was received from the Roy Jurva family for the Township Board to attend the 50th Wedding Anniversary of Roy and Ruth Jurva.

Keweenaw Petroleum sent reminder that our prepay cost for propane would be $1.69 per gal.

MTA Conference announcement that they would be having a Land Use Session in Saginaw Sept 18th and 19th.

 

OLD BUSINESS:

WASTE MANAGEMENT/ STUMP-JUMPERS:  Deb has made contact with the Stump-Jumper Co. but hasn’t been able to sit down and discuss needs and conditions.  Our contract with Waste Management expires next year so there is time to negotiate.

BUDGET AMENDMENTS:  Supervisor Maki indicated that we will see budget adjustments every month per suggestion of the state auditors.

NEW BUSINESS:

PENSION:  The pension records relative to in lieu of social security withholding aren’t available with any agency of government.  More investigation is anticipated by the supervisor.

LAKE/SWIMMERS ITCH: Evidence of swimmers/itch has been confirmed in Lake Roland.  It is related to the presence of geese and ducks.  The DNR in previous years managed to trap and relocate numerous quantities. Prevalent during warm weather and in shallow water.  Snails are breeders of the worms.

 

SUMMER CLEAN-UP: The non-metal waste clean-up is scheduled for August 8th 

 

 

TOWNSHIP PARK: Discussion related to the condition and status of the playground equipment was questioned by the board.  All equipment was believed to be in good order.

 

PLANNING COMMISSION UPDATE:  The commission is hosting an open house on the 30th of July.  An update of the progress made to date will be presented along with information on DNR fishing conditions in our lakes and streams.

Other conditions related to water quality, hazardous waste, air quality, open burning and wells will be addressed. George and Lynn Madison will be presenters.

CITIZEN’S COMMENTS; 

Mike Sabo indicated that our current radio license for the fire dept was good to the year 2015.

It was indicated that current propane cost at Settler’s CO-OP was $1.50 per gal.  Township to check other sources before concluding our contract provider for 2009-2010.

PAYMENT OF THE BILLS: Motion to pay the bills- $17,569.71: Lindeman/Saur all voted aye.
