MINUTES OF THE ELM RIVER TOWNSHIP BOARD MEETING

JUNE 18, 2009

 

 

The regular township meeting was called to order at 7:00 p.m.  Board members present were Lynn Huotari, Jim Saur, Deb Maki, Margaret Lindeman and Bob Sibilsky.

 

MINUTES OF MEETING:  The minutes of the May 14, 2009 meeting were read and approved.  Motion to approve:  Lindeman/Saur, all voted aye.

 

TREASURER’S REPORT:  The treasurer’s report was given by Treasurer Huotari and was accepted as given.  The fund balances are as follows:  Citizen’s Bank $7,258.36, SNB General Account $834.99, MBIA Fire Fund $38,453.30, MBIA General Fund $117,148.84, MBIA Tax Fund $43,659.99, SNB Tax Account $4,268.59.

 

 

CORRESPONDENCE:

 

MTA Summer Legislative Conference announced for August 12-14, 2009.

 

Department of Natural Resources open house scheduled for June 24, 2009, at the Baraga Operations Service Center was announced.

 

ADAMS TOWNSHIP FIRST RESPONDERS YEAR IN REVIEW presented by Dave Mattila.

 

Responders came to Elm River Township10 times in the last year (8 male, 2 female).  Of the 10 incidents there were 3 car accidents, 2 snowmobile and 1 atv/dirt bike.

 

Discussion relevant to the possibility of their being a need for first responders in the Twin Lakes area took place.  There was interest expressed by some of the firemen’s wives earlier this year.

 

 

OLD BUSINESS

 

BERM:  The berm project was put on hold because of circumstances changing with the trail.  The mill is treated with dust control and the dirt supply from the county is on hold.  When the situation changes, the project will be restarted.

 

MISSION STATEMENT:  The board desires to work on this project at a mutually agreed work session.  Board members are to provide dates that will work well for them to hold this special session.

 

WASTE MANAGEMENT/STUMP JUMPERS:  Our contract expires next year with Waste Mgmt.

 

Supr. Maki is trying to get contract talks with the Stump Jumpers, a waste collection company from Ontonagon.

 

 

NEW BUSINESS:

 

BUDGET AMENDENTS:  The 2009-2010 budget was modified in the following areas:  Fire Equip Maintenance, $2,500.00 increase, Fire Truck purchase $17,000.00, Fire Fund revenue $43,000.00, Community Rec. $5,000.00, Planning Commission $1,800.00, Township Board and Webmaster $2,700.00, Audit fee $10,000.00, Advertising $2,000.00, and Office Equipment $3,000.

 

Motion to approve:  Lindeman/Saur all voted aye.

 

HOUGHTON COUNTY SHERIFF REPORT:  The County recorded Elm River calls at 32 for 2008 and 19 to date for 2009.

 

LINDRUS/DOMITROVICH:  The proposed land division requested by the group was in violation of state statue and township ordinance.  The group was directed to revise their proposal and resubmit it at another session.

 

COPIER/PRINTER:  Supervisor Maki recommended the purchase of a copier from Sayen’s.  Local service, quality and desired features were the main reasons for the selection.  Cost Est., $3,200.00.

 

Motion to purchase:  Sibilsky/Lindeman, all voted aye.

 

FAX:  Supervisor Maki donated a fax unit to the township.

 

PLANNING COMMISSION:  The commission has sent out a community survey, which will be completed at the end of July.  All residents are being solicited.

 

 

CITIZEN’S COMMENTS:

 

John Reynolds questioned the status of the door replacement to the Fire Department portion of the building.  Clerk Sibilsky directed to proceed with the contracting of the canopy and door installation.

 

John Reynolds requested use of the old copier for their needs.  Township granted their use of the old unit.

 

Mike Sabo reminded the board of the pancake breakfast July 5th, and their need to set up ASAP.

 

 

PAYMENT OF BILLS:  Motion to pay the township bills $18,968.06,  Saur/Sibilsky, all voted aye.

 

ANNOUNCEMENTS:  State Park to celebrate 90 years of service on Saturday at 4:00 p.m.  All Township officials and residents are urged to attend.
